i got home early today to try to make some macarons, yes i got sucked into the phase, but heck they are such pretty little things aren't they? Well i think my motivation to make them was so i could take photos of it afterwards. yeah so i got home all excited to make these macarons, now apparently i used the french version of making them and apparently it can be temperamental and trust me it was. anywhoo so i got started and i was weighing my ingredients and i accidentally dropped some out of the bowl and i was "meh, it doesn't matter" and this happened for most of the ingredients that i weighed, my scales are quite old so i don't even know if it is accurate or not. so then it was time to whip the eggs white which i did and then i added the sugar and whipped it some more. then i added that to the dry mixture and stir it in, it become so stiff and not at all smooth or flowy. then i proceeded to mix it multiple times because i thought "what's the harm in over mixing?" even when i knew that if you overmix a batter especially something like a meringue mixture, you will kill it. hmmm yeah i should stop being so carefree about my cooking. so i was piping it out and i accidentally piped it too close together but i thought "it won't expand." yeah so i left it to form a layer over the top.
while i was waiting i went for a run, i think they were in the process of trimming down the trees in the park, because i kept hearing this saw-ing sound which freak the frick out me. i felt like someone was going to come up behind and saw me to death .
anyways got back from my run and decided to alter some of my op shop clothes, after i finished that i put the macarons in the oven. i made the buttercream icing which was nice but overly sweet. i think my icing was the best bit actually which just really shows how crap my macarons were.
seriously in the oven they expanded and i was like crap, because now they were stuck together. so i got them out of the oven, and they kinda had a brown tinge to it but it wasn't burnt, they just looked like colourful cookies now. it was such a bitch trying to get them off the baking paper, in the process they kept breaking. it was so not the right texture anyways, mine didn't have that crispy shell, it just tasted like a chewy sweet cookie. anywhoo i decided that i'm going to call my macarons, cream filled cookies.
yes that was my intention all along....
these are some of the evidence of failed macarons ahem "cookies"
see the cracks and everything, it looks nothing like its meant to, i might try a different recipe next time.
tasting it was alright, nothing spectacular, i think that might of been my fault, but i guess i got the idea of taste i guess, i'm not sure if i will be willing to pay for them now, considering they are quite pricey. but man they look so pretty so i think that weighs out everything out. if any of you guys actually know what they taste like, please enlighten me.
but making these today, reminded me of how much i like baking, but maybe i should stick with simple stuff because i don't have the patience for delicate stuff.
on the plus side i felt very productive today. =)
Love Squealer.
